This painting is a modern interpretation of Dorothy and her ruby red shoes. The delicate interplay of pattern is echoed both in the striped dress and the reflection onto the floor, creating a sense of continuity and depth. The subject gazes impassively to the side, her expression enigmatic, her focus beyond the frame, inviting the viewer to wonder what lies just out of sight.
This painting is from the |Contained| series, in which the whole figure is captured within the borders of the canvas as a metaphor for society trying to control, restrain and measure women. Within these confines, each woman asserts her quiet power. Each woman makes the space her own and displays resilience.
