“Friend of Dorothy” by Kim Magee
A playful, nostalgic mixed-media artwork celebrating individuality, friendship and a little bit of magic.
Friend of Dorothy features a pair of unmistakable sparkling ruby-red shoes, teamed with lavender socks, delicate vintage-style lace and patchworked denim. Set against a vibrant pink floral background and hand-painted blue tiled floor, the piece combines fabric, paint, collage and embellishment to create wonderful texture and dimension.
The title Friend of Dorothy adds another layer to the work — a playful nod to the phrase historically associated with LGBTQ+ identity and community, while the ruby shoes reference the enduring magic of The Wizard of Oz.
The contrast of worn denim, pretty florals, lace and sparkling red sequins gives the artwork a quirky folk-art character and a strong sense of nostalgia.
