Pulling Disarray into Order
(from the triptych: Alone. Pulling Disarray into Order. Collapse)
Oil and Acrylic in wood Panel in Custom made Box Frame
Bathed in the bluest blue that ever blued, Pulling Disarray into Order is a luminous meditation on chaos, clarity, and the act of seeing itself. Part of Christopher R Inwood’s conceptual triptych Alone. Pulling Disarray into Order. Collapse, this painting occupies the heart of the series—both literally and metaphorically—as its most compositionally dense and psychologically charged moment.
Set into a handcrafted box frame, the ultramarine panel hums with quiet intensity. Across its surface, Inwood has scattered looping, instinctual ochre-hued squiggles—delicate, deliberate gestures that draw from the artist’s deeply personal experience of entoptic phenomena: the translucent, worm-like threads that drift through our vision when we gaze into a clear sky. Here, those fleeting internal visions are transformed into something external, enduring, and painterly.
These marks are not random. They are rhythm. Repetition. A dance of thought and muscle memory. Having previously layered these squiggles over portraiture, Inwood distills them here into pure abstraction—allowing the surface to become its own subject. The result is a hybrid: part landscape, part optical illusion, part meditative diagram. It’s a work that resists easy categorization—simultaneously decorative and conceptual, cerebral and sensuous.
As the central piece of the triptych, Pulling Disarray into Order pulses with a visual density that balances the looser compositions of Alone and Collapse. Together, the trio maps a poetic emotional journey—from isolation, through the frenetic processing of thought and sensation, to a final release.
This auction offers an exceptional opportunity to acquire a pivotal work from one of Australia’s most introspective and inventive contemporary painters. Whether as a standalone piece or as the crown jewel of a complete triptych, Pulling Disarray into Order is a quiet storm—bold, beautiful, and utterly unforgettable.
A rare fusion of vision and introspection—this is Christopher R Inwood at his most distilled and profound.
