Hammerhead shark exploring the shallows of a reef. Artwork by Prudence Coburn.
This artwork has the potential to be a pivotal moment in my practice. It’s a work where I was experimenting with conveying depth and texture through the use of various brush strokes. This piece was not planned in advance, but instead came from a moment of confidence and the removal of external pressures. The best thing about paintings is that the scenario may not be a real moment in time but the imagery is still able to take you there. I am loving exploring the idea that I am able to completely fabricate a moment in time, a whole new reality that may never have happened or at least has never been seen. I believe that I wanted to paint this piece as a reflection of myself, with a strong focus of marine life in my practice, I find this piece to be very personal and relevant. The Hammerhead cruises past the shallow reef, with no clear intention or purpose other than to continue on its way. There is nothing that can interfere, not even a sound to interrupt this moment of the Hammerhead pursuing what’s to come. A certain level of fear is ignited in the recognition of its presence but no sign for a need to panic.
