In Bark, Christopher R. Inwood strips painting back to its most elemental language: line, rhythm, colour, and movement. Across a panel of “the bluest blue that can be blued,” lines gather, intersect, and travel through the saturated surface, creating an image that seems simultaneously deliberate and instinctive.
The title opens the painting in multiple directions. Bark can be surface—the scarred, linear skin of a tree, carrying evidence of growth and time. But bark is also sound: abrupt, animal, and immediate. Inwood leaves the distinction unresolved, allowing the lines to exist somewhere between natural pattern, gesture, landscape, and visual noise.
What makes Bark so compelling is precisely this ambiguity. There is no figure demanding interpretation and no narrative insisting on explanation. Instead, the eye is given something more primal: blue, mark, repetition, movement.
It is deceptively simple, wonderfully strange, and, above all, exceptionally good on the eyeballs.
