Stimuli doesn't depict anything, and that is precisely where it gets its power.
Across a wood panel saturated in what Inwood calls “the bluest blue that can be blued,” small brush marks interrupt the surface. Pinks, ochres, browns, creams and flesh tones appear almost rhythmically across the blue. Each carries the evidence of its making: the pressure of the brush, ridges of paint, broken edges and places where the blue cuts straight back through.
The marks are incredibly simple. Together, they become difficult to stop looking at.
The title Stimuli points towards something fundamental in Inwood's wider practice: his interest in supernormal stimulus—the possibility that colour, contrast and exaggeration can push perception beyond the ordinary. Here, there is no portrait, narrative or recognisable object to hold onto. The stimulus itself becomes the subject.
And the blue does most of the heavy lifting.
It is beautiful, excessive and almost absurdly intense. Against it, the warmer marks begin to flicker. Some resemble fragments of flesh. Others are simply paint. The eye jumps between them, searches for patterns, makes connections and then loses them again.
There may be something underneath all of that.
Or perhaps Stimuli really is as straightforward as it first appears: blue, flesh, repetition, paint—and something that feels extraordinarily good on the eyeballs.
