Joan of Arc is a fictional representation, bringing together elements of cowboy culture and the feminine, with a sprinkle of French Impressionism. The work is influenced by Manet’s portraits and the British aristocracy’s approach to equine culture. This painting is a study of the strength of women, depicting a figure seated upon a horse with a lasso—an image traditionally associated with male representation in art history. Through this work, I am exploring the stereotypes and conventions that have shaped historical depictions of gender.
Artist Bio: Edwina works across a range of mediums — ink, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, gouache and primarily oils— Expressive brushwork forms the foundation of Edwina’s practice, gestural fluid mark making formed formed from visual references that transform intuitively. Working primarily from vintage fashion photography, these serve as a source material transferring the figurative visual memory, while inventing a new palette to create a new image.
