To my young son, the small bits of shell, sticks and rock that wash up with the ocean tide are as good as silver and gold. In making this painting I lay down think paint and medium textured with sand and then sanded back to reveal colourful moments; this process echos the addition and erasure of moving sand with the waves. This painting is part of my Magic Beach series that drew from my young son’s absolute fascination with the beach and the wonder found in Alison Lester’s classic book of the same title (that we read a million times). This textured, abstract work offers a touchstone to connect with coastal summertime wonder.
Artist Bio: Jacqueline is interested in painting what it feels like moving through and connecting with particular environments. The abstract paintings build up over time with emotive colour and gooey brushwork being key.
Jacqueline has completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Honours in Creative Industries and Doctorate in Philosophy (Creative Arts). She has worked as an artist and educator for the past decade and has had several solo exhibitions.
She currently lives in Mcleans Ridges, northern NSW with her young family.
