Major Mitchell Cockatoos by the Water’s Edge captures a gathering of Australia’s iconic pink cockatoos within a dreamlike wetland landscape, where soft reflections and expressive brushwork create a sense of stillness and movement at once. The painting balances playful character with atmosphere, drawing attention to the birds’ flamboyant crests and quiet social interaction along the waterline.
The stylised rolling clouds reference the distinctive “flat-bottomed cloud” motifs often associated with the work of Blak Douglas, whose graphic skies and symbolic landscapes have become a recognisable visual language in contemporary Australian art.
Hints of swirling texture and expressive colour also nod toward the emotional movement and painterly energy of Vincent van Gogh, particularly in the animated sky forms and rhythmic brushstrokes. The result is a contemporary Australian scene that feels both nostalgic and alive. Celebrating native birdlife through colour, movement and atmosphere.
