In Unconscious, Christopher R. Inwood strips painting back to one of its most instinctive acts: the brush touching the surface.
Across a field of “the bluest blue that can be blued,” fragments of flesh-toned paint appear almost like thoughts before they become language. Some are pale and exposed, others bruised, brown or shadowed; none resolves into a body, yet collectively they carry the unmistakable suggestion of human presence. They could be fragments of skin, memories, figures, or simply gestures.
The title gives these seemingly spontaneous marks a psychological charge. The unconscious describes mental processes that remain outside ordinary awareness yet can still influence thought and behaviour. Inwood translates that idea into paint: rather than illustrating the mind, he allows gesture, repetition and colour to suggest something surfacing without quite becoming known.
And then there is the sheer pleasure of looking at it. The electric blue makes every earthy stroke vibrate. From a distance the marks scatter across the panel like visual static; up close, each becomes an individual record of pressure, direction, pigment and hand.
Within the wider language of Cannon Fodder Blue, Unconscious feels particularly important because the human figure has almost disappeared—but the human remains everywhere. What is normally contained inside Inwood's portraits has been released across the entire field.
It is painting before explanation: something felt first, understood later—if it is understood at all.
