'The Interval' reflects a moment of pause before taking a new step. The painting depicts a child looking back towards a guardian, capturing a fleeting yet familiar moment in childhood—the gradual movement away from the safety of a parent and towards the wider world.
I was interested in the emotional space of this transition: the brief hesitation between dependence and independence, reassurance and uncertainty. It is a universal experience, one that often lingers more vividly in memory than the event itself.
Painted loosely and in vivid, surreal colours, the work evokes the quality of a remembered moment or a dream. Rather than documenting a specific scene, The Interval explores the emotional resonance of childhood, where memory, imagination and lived experience become intertwined.
