There is something wonderfully unnecessary about Squible.
Across a panel of “the bluest blue that can be blued,” Christopher R. Inwood scatters small, blunt deposits of flesh colour: pinks, ochres, creams, browns and bruised purples. They don't resolve into a figure. They don't tell us where we are. They don't behave themselves into a convenient meaning.
And they don't need to.
Inwood is usually associated with psychologically charged portraiture and works in oil, acrylic and charcoal on wood. christopherrinwood.com Here, almost everything is stripped away except colour, repetition and the physical drag of a loaded brush.
The marks are extraordinarily bodily. They could be fragments of skin, little interruptions, samples, mistakes, thoughts—or absolutely nothing of the sort. Squible is stronger for refusing to settle the question.
What remains is the collision itself: earthy, fleshy marks floating against an almost impossibly saturated blue.
It doesn't ask to be decoded.
It just sits there being ridiculously good on the eyeballs.
