This painting celebrates a uniquely Australian tradition—the roadside stop that marks the beginning of an adventure. A vintage station wagon loaded with surfboards waits outside a weathered country general store as the last light of the day stretches across the landscape. Old fuel bowsers, power poles, birds overhead and a loyal cattle dog all become familiar symbols of journeys remembered.
Inspired by family holidays, regional Australia and the nostalgia of simpler times, the work captures the anticipation that exists between destinations. It is a moment where travellers pause, fill the tank, buy fresh bread, exchange stories and continue towards the coast before darkness falls.
Painted in my contemporary Australiana style, this artwork combines bold colour, expressive line work and storytelling to celebrate Australia's disappearing roadside culture. It invites viewers to remember the freedom of open highways, summer holidays and the small country towns that remain at the heart of Australian life.
