Just like the saying “a little fish in a big sea,” this painting reflects my own sense of feeling small in a world that often feels overwhelming and chaotic. There’s so much noise and movement beyond my reach, yet in my own corner I find safety and calm. Still, the outside world calls—full of temptations, challenges, and possibilities luring me out. I hope viewers can find their own moment of stillness here, while also sensing the pull of what lies beyond.
Artist Bio: Rather than beginning with a fixed concept, each painting evolves through a process of discovery, allowing meaning to emerge from the work itself. Van Dam is the winner of the Hunter Emerging Art Prize (Painting) and was a semi-finalist in the Newcastle Club Foundation Art Prize. Her work has been featured on the cover of magazines and exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout New South Wales.
