In Something Becoming Known, Christopher R. Inwood captures the tantalising instant when chaos begins to resemble meaning.
Across a panel of “the bluest blue that can be blued,” scattered strokes of flesh-coloured paint hover like fragments of memory, sensation or thought. At first they appear disconnected—little incidents of colour suspended within an electric blue field. Yet toward the lower half of the painting, something begins to happen. Marks gather. Lines intersect. Shapes accumulate. An image seems perpetually on the verge of revealing itself.
That uncertainty is the painting's seduction. The eye instinctively searches for order, joining fragments together and attempting to recognise something that may not actually be there. Inwood makes the viewer's own act of perception part of the work.
Within Cannon Fodder Blue, where Inwood repeatedly uses the human figure to investigate behaviour and emotional experience, Something Becoming Known turns that enquiry inward. The body has largely disappeared, but its flesh-toned palette remains—as though the portraits surrounding it have been broken apart and returned to their constituent marks.
And it is tremendously good on the eyeballs. Warm ochres, pinks, creams and browns flicker violently against that extraordinary blue, creating a surface that refuses to sit still.
Perhaps the title provides the best way into it. This is not a painting of something known.
It is a painting of the moment before knowing—when thought, memory and perception begin assembling themselves into meaning, but haven't quite got there yet.
Artist Bio: Inwood has exhibited across Australia at galleries, art spaces, and festivals including, Brisbane Power House, Caloundra Regional Gallery, Brisbane Square Library, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, Perc Tucker Regional gallery, Brisbane Street Art Festival and has been a finalist in the Brisbane Portrait Prize x 3, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, the Percival Portrait Painting Prize x 2, the Toowoomba Biennial Emerging Artists Award, Melt Portrait Prize x 3. Inwood refined his understanding of art and its histories at The University of Queensland studying Art History.
