In Something Underneath, Christopher R. Inwood transforms colour and gesture into a compelling meditation on what lies beneath the surface. Across a wood panel of “the bluest blue that can be blued,” fragments of red ochre emerge, cluster and dissolve, as though another image—or another reality—is slowly breaking through. The contrast is immediately seductive. Inwood’s luminous blue possesses an almost infinite quality, while the earthy ochres feel bodily, ancient and material. They might evoke skin, soil, scars, fragments of landscape or something altogether less definable. Nothing resolves completely, and therein lies the painting’s power. The title introduces a quiet psychological tension. Something Underneath suggests that what we see is never the whole story: beneath appearances lie memories, impulses, histories and emotions that occasionally reveal themselves through the cracks. Visually immediate yet wonderfully elusive, the painting rewards both instinct and contemplation. You do not necessarily need to know what is underneath. It is the irresistible suspicion that something is there that keeps you looking.

Artist Bio: Inwood has exhibited across Australia at galleries, art spaces, and festivals including, Brisbane Power House, Caloundra Regional Gallery, Brisbane Square Library, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, Perc Tucker Regional gallery, Brisbane Street Art Festival and has been a finalist in the Brisbane Portrait Prize x 3, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, the Percival Portrait Painting Prize x 2, the Toowoomba Biennial Emerging Artists Award, Melt Portrait Prize x 3. Inwood refined his understanding of art and its histories at The University of Queensland studying Art History.
