Tangerine Track Two explores scenes in parks surrounding Sydney's foreshore. Rather than striving for precise depictions, Gemma aims to capture the essence of a moment, feeling and memories of place with the use of scale manipulation, representational distortion and vibrant colour combinations. Feeling of dusk by the sea and ambient in temperature, it speaks of moods, memories and feelings, but also measures of time.
Working initially from sketches and photography, she discards these and works from memory and imagination. Using recurring patterns and motifs, fallen branches, pathways and organic shapes. Distilling the landscape to abstract representations of place.
Artist Bio: Years of working in magazine design and alongside photographers has shaped her understanding of colour and composition and honed her aesthetic. Her ongoing interest in form and colour led to the decision to leave publishing to explore a more visceral mode of expression through painting.
On completion of her degree in 2023 Gemma was awarded the Harvey Galleries National Art School Exhibition Prize and the National Art School BFA graduate, COSO Architecture Landscape Prize. Her work has been exhibited in group exhibitions at .Mcontemporary Darlinghurst, Harvey Gallery, Ditty Wheels and at the National Art School and Waverley Woollahra Art School in Sydney and is held in private collections across Australia.
