In Bacon, Christopher R. Inwood presents a screaming baboon against a panel of “the bluest blue that can be blued,” creating an image that is as visually seductive as it is psychologically unsettling. The electric intensity of the blue heightens the raw physicality of the animal, while the expressive brushwork captures a moment suspended between aggression, fear, and instinct.
The title operates with characteristic wit. It is an unmistakable nod to Francis Bacon, whose distorted figures forever altered the language of figurative painting. Here, Inwood replaces the human subject with one of our closest evolutionary relatives, inviting comparisons between animal impulse and the emotional extremes of human existence.
Part of the unseen Cannon Fodder Blue collection, Bacon blurs the boundaries between portrait, allegory, and art historical homage. Equal parts playful and profound, the work reminds us that beneath civilisation's polished veneer, something older, louder, and altogether more primal continues to stare back.
Artist Bio: Inwood has exhibited across Australia at galleries, art spaces, and festivals including, Brisbane Power House, Caloundra Regional Gallery, Brisbane Square Library, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, Perc Tucker Regional gallery, Brisbane Street Art Festival and has been a finalist in the Brisbane Portrait Prize x 3, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, the Percival Portrait Painting Prize x 2, the Toowoomba Biennial Emerging Artists Award, Melt Portrait Prize x 3. Inwood refined his understanding of art and its histories at The University of Queensland studying Art History.
