'Fig. 128' reflects Ashton Wastney's interest in the tension between control and spontaneity. Thick passages of oil paint, energetic fluorescent marks and softened transitions create a portrait that feels both immediate and unresolved. Rather than illustrating a subject, the work celebrates the physical language of paint itself, inviting viewers to experience the image through colour, surface and gesture. As part of the artist's ongoing Fig. series, the painting represents a considered example of Ashton's contemporary portrait practice.
Artist Bio: Ashton Wastney is an abstract figurative artist from Nelson, New Zealand who began studying design in Wellington and Since 2018 has been residing and basing his painting practice in Melbourne, Australia.
His works use anatomy as the base for abstraction and he approaches each work without pre meditation or a final intention. Ashton uses art to communicate methods of understanding the subconscious. Then, forming bases of anatomical and physiological aspects, he instinctively reveals moments of chance and emotion, embodying a distortion of mental clarity and consciousness.
