'Fig. 123' demonstrates Ashton Wastney's ongoing investigation into contemporary portraiture through gesture, surface and process. Thick passages of oil paint are layered, manipulated and reworked, allowing the image to evolve through the physical act of painting. Fluorescent accents punctuate a restrained palette, creating moments of tension and movement across the composition. Measuring 61 × 66 cm, the work is a confident example of Wastney's evolving Fig. series, offering collectors a substantial and highly tactile original painting.
Artist Bio: Ashton Wastney is an abstract figurative artist from Nelson, New Zealand who began studying design in Wellington and Since 2018 has been residing and basing his painting practice in Melbourne, Australia.
His works use anatomy as the base for abstraction and he approaches each work without pre meditation or a final intention. Ashton uses art to communicate methods of understanding the subconscious. Then, forming bases of anatomical and physiological aspects, he instinctively reveals moments of chance and emotion, embodying a distortion of mental clarity and consciousness.
