This piece explores the layered history of place - what came before, what remains, and what is disappearing. The skeletal forms of towering eucalyptus trees loom over a delicate Queenslander home, their presence both protective and haunting. These trees were here long before the house, yet in a suburban landscape where both historic homes and native bushland are vanishing, they feel like ghosts of a past that is slipping away.
The stark black lines of the trees were a bold, instinctive addition - an unfiltered response to the tension of living among them. They stand as both witnesses and remnants, a reminder of what we build around and what we lose in the process. A lone white-faced heron, another displaced figure, wanders through the undergrowth, adding to the sense of quiet resilience amid change.
By layering abstraction with architectural precision, “Suburban Palimpsest” captures the complex relationship between nature, history, and the ever-shifting urban landscape.
Artist Bio: Amy Ruth (Grey) is an artist based in South-East Queensland, known for her vibrant, bold, and eye-catching paintings. Her work celebrates the beauty of nature and urban environments, blending imagination with vivid colors that evoke feelings of joy and delight.
Amy was a finalist in the Revival Emerging Art Prize 2025 and winner of Pine Rivers Show Non-Traditional Art winner in 2024.
