This painting belongs to my recent series of works on paper. In this series I return to a group of symbols that continue to call me back to my motherland.
lions have been part of the visual language of Persia for thousands of years. The lion and sun is an ancient Persian motif, originally a secular and astrological symbol. part of a deep historical identity that continues to live in our collective memory. The motifs around the lion in this painting are inspired by Persian rugs.
Artist Bio: Mina Afra is an Iranian-born Australian painter based in Melbourne. Her painting practice is deeply engaged with her emotional experience in nature. She uses the subject of landscapes, not as an observed scene to render, but rather as a trigger for an internal experience.

She has exhibited in numerous group shows across Australia and was awarded the Judges’ Prize at the 2024 Albert Park Art Show. Her landscapes have been selected as finalists for the 2025 Ripper Art Prize, the 2024 Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize, and featured in the Salon des Refusés of the Lethbridge Gallery 20000 Small Scale Prize.
