This work is inspired by the invisible (or not so invisible) labour women put into making events special (Christmas, Diwali, Birthdays - you name it) I wanted to emphasise the importance of rest and a sort of 'rest as protest' in snoozing on these domestic responsibilities. This figure is engaging in ‘rest as protest’, languidly lounging and reading her book in the kitchen. She's taking the evening off. This work is ready to hang and framed in Tasmanian oak. I create work for the 'female gaze' which aims to re contextualise how female figures are represented in art. Recently all my work has skewed towards depicting femme figures unapologetically lounging. I paint in a signature flattened style with bold bright colours and a focus on line and form over shading, to achieve this I use a type of matte paint that achieves the level of hyper pigmentation I'm looking for.
